The Beany #4, is a testament to how hunting for (and drawing) the little pleasures of life can make a huge difference to the quality of our lives. After my mother’s death in February 2008, life felt very bleak. Slowly, over the following twelve months, I embarked on a new drawing journey to remind myself of many of life’s joys, both past and present.

This issue covers a year tinged with sadness, yes, but also so much more. Unpacking the boxes of my mother’s things I rediscovered childhood delights like baking a cake on a Sunday afternoon with my Mum’s Kenwood Chef, or mixing up a dessert with the old hand-whisk I used as a child. I find myself excited by little pleasures like squeezing lemons for pancakes, take a trip to London, discover the healing power of cleaning and decluttering, and eat a lot (A LOT) of breakfasts.

Michael Nobbs is a full-time artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order). He writes, tweets and podcasts about drawing and trying to keep things simple.

In the late 1990s he was diagnosed with
ME/CFS and, over the last decade, has learnt a lot about sustaining a creative career with limited energy.
