About The Beany

Charting my hunt for small ways to enjoy life, The Beany is my hand-drawn journal about life on the side of my hill in Wales.

After I was diagnosed with ME/CFS at the end of the 90s I began a drawing journey that has helped me back to health and on to a career as an artist and blogger. Over the years The Beany has followed my journey as I've drawn and written about the many things, large and small, that have happened in my life.

The latest issue has just been released, and more than ever, is a testament to how hunting for (and drawing) the little pleasures of life can make a huge difference to the quality of our lives. After my mother's death in February 2008, life felt very bleak. Slowly, over the following twelve months, I embarked on a new drawing journey to remind myself of many of life's joys, both past and present.

I could squeeze lemons all day

Breakfast, cakes and squeezing lemons

The Beany #4 covers a year tinged with sadness, yes, but also so much more. Unpacking the boxes of my mother's things I rediscovered childhood delights like baking a cake on a Sunday afternoon with my Mum's Kenwood Chef, or mixing up a dessert with the old hand-whisk I used as a child. I find myself excited by little pleasures like squeezing lemons for pancakes, take a trip to London, discover the healing power of cleaning and decluttering, and eat a lot (A LOT) of breakfasts.

Unlike the previous three issues, this new Beany is in full colour and is available in two versions, a very limited edition hardback version and a softback.

The hardback is priced at £30 (which includes postage to wherever you are in the world), is signed and editioned (the edition is limited to 100) and dispatched directly from my studio.

The softback can be ordered directly from Blurb and is priced at £9.95.
